((An AIM chat.
CHARACTERS: Eder Fenah (Ryuu Firewind)
Merth Rehkor (Rose Tatsuaru) ))
[20:09] RoseTatsuaru: It had been the monthly look over for this home. This age was old enough there were not too many known problems, but of course she had to make her appointment. Standing in her Burgundy uniform, adjusting the large specks. Her note bag was to her side, which had every judgement of this book. It also had the note copy that the Maintenance held to make sure that they remember what the last time they looked it over. She stood at the door of his home, looking over the last notebook, making checks inside of her mind. With a gentle sigh she looked back to the door. Where was he? The time was set, and he's a minute and a half late...
[20:12] Ryuu Firewind: Where was he? Lost in his writing, of course. A huge, weighty tome sat before him, a gargantuan book, larger than most description books, filled with small but perfectly formed letters that seemed to devour pages. His pen raced, but he still got nowhere. It was only the chiming of a small metal object on his desk, a clock with an alarm, which alterted him to his appointment. Nearly falling out of his chair, he scrambled to put the pens away, to hide the huge book in the secret compartment under the floor, to find the other, much older book. Finally, he grabbed a pair of thin glasses, stuck them on his face, and bounded over the chair to the door.
[20:18] RoseTatsuaru: By the time that the door swung open her eyes behind her horribly thick, large round frames looked at him agitated. He was late, she was on time, and there was no reason for him to have to rush to the door to get here. She looked back over to him and adjusted her glasses. "I'm Master Merth Rehkor of the Maintenance guild. And let's not question why a Master is making a house call I hate explaining it..." She drew up the hand to stop him from questioning before put it down. Her bright green eyes were like stone. "Now. You have a book that is needed for inspection this month.... It's-" she forgot the name. Looking to her notebook she adjusted her glasses to read. "The Book of.. Storms?" not on her normal list. This would be interesting. The kid to look over this was sick... "May I see your book room?"
[20:24] Ryuu Firewind:
He paused, looking a little confused. "Storms?" he asked. "I thought it was Empyrean, the Family's age? But, well, if Storms is up... it was only recently finished... er. Ahem. My apologies. You may, Master Rehkor." He bowed, opening the door to her.
The house was tastefully decorated, with many small luminescent stones placed around in a tasteful manner to give the impression that they were not underground, but above in a place with bright sunlight. Indeed, he had selected the stones specifically for their unusual ability to brighten and dim even as the sun itself did. Art from many worlds, and also by the other resident of the house, lined the walls, and the whole place looked rather comfortable. "The book room is just through here," he said.
Many books lined the walls, the product of generations of Writer's Guild members. Most were notebooks, though a few linking books and one or two true Description books graced the shelves. He examined the shelf, then pulled two books off the shelf. "The Description Book and the companion Linking Book, Master Rehkor."
[20:39] RoseTatsuaru: The confusion was not nice. She looked back to her sheets. Yes. This was the notebook. This was the book. She huffed hard with the thought of a mistake but shook her head. "Recently finished means it still needs inspections. We've had writers before love to make changes 'after' the book has been completed. That is why we do monthly checks..." She huffed a bit again and walked in. "And just call me Master Merth. Master Rehkor was my great great grandfather..." she moved inside and looked around. Honestly she had forgotten that people lived in homes. Because she was not married yet, she had to stay in the Guild quarters, and was used to her small little apartment place instead of an actual home...
But it was really nice. She wouldn't mind a place like this. But it was easier if it was smaller. It meant she could find anything if her glasses went. But she continued to follow She moved along the walls, drawing out her private notebook to make her own notes. The arrangement of the room, the way that he organized it. She moved up to the Description book and gave it a look over. The stamps were still there for the last check ups, but he did not get his until they returned. She returned it to him, just before taking the companion Linking Book and giving it another look over. "Hmm...." she returned it to him. "Well then. last but not least, I need to see the actual Age, and enter with you. Of course."
[20:43] Ryuu Firewind:
He nodded. "Of course, Master Merth. I am Eder Fenah, by the way, of the Fenah family," he said, slighly embarassed that he'd forgotten to introduce himself. "Right... before we begin, I must stipulate that while this Age is quite chaotic and, indeed, rather dangerous, it is not inherently unstable. It is possible that the isle where I have located my research station is; however, the Age itself is not, no matter how chaotic it might appear. Though of course, that is for you to decide..."
He wound his way to a chest in the corner, taking out a pair of his own goggles, a sack, and a thick raincoat. Putting these on (the goggles around his neck), he approached the book. "Now, which one of us goes first...?"
[20:51] RoseTatsuaru: The moment he stated that it was chaotic, her eyebrow twitched. She tried to keep herself in control, lips withdrawn, and took in a deep breath. She had read that in the notes, it was written all over the place. But chaotic or not, the guild had called it safe enough for humans. It was a work of art, not a vacation Age. She sighed, nodding, just a bit and looking to him. ".... well. It has been.... voted... stable enough to not be burned... so...." she couldn't argue.
Putting the notebook back she put her glasses into the box, and drew out her own pair of goggles. Crap. She didn't have a raincoat. It didn't say anything about getting soaked. Well. She drew up the hood of her cape. It was somewhat elemental protective. If this is what kind of world she was coming in it should have been noted to come with an E. V. Suit. Someone was going to have an ear ache later....
"You enter first. I follow after. I hope the station is indoors because I have to make notes and I will not let my notebook get soaked..." she returned it to the bag and looked to him with a gentle nod. "Well then. You first, Mr. Fenah."
[21:00] Ryuu Firewind:
"The first room is indoors, I 'm not nearly so foolish to link to the outside," he said, a slight smile on his face. With that, he pressed his hand to the page, then vanished.
The room he entered into was round and made of a bluish metal. Though small, the vaulted ceiling gave an illusion of being much larger. The floor was tiled and patterned in the traditional star shape, made with blue and grey tiles.
The room itself was quiet, though there was a curious whistling and the occasional far-off boom. There was a door to the west, with a knob in the center. He waited for the Maintainer to come through before doing anything else.
[21:55] RoseTatsuaru: "Trust me... I've linked in the rain before..." she whisperd with a sort of scowl beneath her breath. When she linked through herself, she thought of what she had linked to. She linked into the middle of the Ocean, and you had to hold your breath and swim up into the diving bubble. It was insane and demanded the link be into the machine, NOT the water. But, she was happy it was indoors.
Hm. Te structure seemed rather strong. Drawing out her notebook she made several notes. Again she drew up to look around, noting the ceiling, how there are no leaks, very strong. Closing the door again she adjusted her goggles, making it easier to focus at him across the room. Because of her horrible vision she needed to be able to adjust them constantly, just to see. With a nod she looked over to him.
"Hm. Rather nice. Very well. I have important notes that stated about the weather. Most of the Maintaners would want you to just give them a glimpse over. I want you to show me every dangerous point you know here." Tucking the book into her water proof pack she nodded again. "Is the storm constant?"
[22:05] Ryuu Firewind:
"Not entirely," he said. "There was exactly one day when I arrived and the sky was completely clear. This was after a year of observation, mind you... so for most purposes yes, it is constantly stormy. Perhaps the eye merely passed over that day."
He opened the door: behind it were a series of stairs leading up to another door. He pulled his goggles on over his glasses, then pulled up the hood of his raincoat, before opening that door.
Immediatly the room was filled with a cacophany of sound, a crashing boom followed by a horrific howl. Rain cascaded in sheets down the staircase; blinding flashes of light sent everything into stark relief. It was so loud that speech was impossible. Eder beckoned to the maintainer, then set out.
Outside was a stone bridge, covered over top with a wire-frame. The wire frame itself was coated in some substance to prevent the lightning arcing to it, but even so, the handrails themselves were also stone. The whole thing was suprisingly sturdy for such a precarious-seeming structure.
Across the walk was yet another door - beyond that, a spiral stair that led up into the observatory proper. This was a large glass dome which gave a spectacular view of the other islands (linked to by similar bridges), and of the storm itself. Just outside the building, on the rocky plateau of the isle, were a myriad assortment of arcane insturments, connected to the dome by wires to various and sundry machines that seemed to read the stuff.
"This is the main observatory," he said. Inside, speech was possible, though it was still quite loud. "The other buildings are various living quarters for myself, and of course the room with the book to link back to this age."
[22:16] RoseTatsuaru: "Hm," was the only comment she made. If it had one sunny day, then the eye that watched over the books would not care. However, if there was one sunny day, and it scorched the entire world, then they'd have a reason to really care. They were not here to check for artistic value. She was here specifically to make sure this world was safe and stable. Following him up she prepared to get nailed by the worst of the storm, or maybe even a cold breeze. Her thick clothing would keep her warm, her cape would keep her somewhat dry. There was no promise of not avoiding a cold later. Oh well. It was her job.
It was a bit hard to not want to make notes. She was attached to her own notebook, and not be able to make something about this bridge and how it worried her made her uncomfortable. But she kept from caring, and just followed forward. The frame was suitable, and the fact that the bridge was made of stone made her a bit more comfortable. If it was made of nara, she would be happier but.... one bad shock, and this entire thing would collapse. But they would survive the storms. Without saying anything (that would fail, she could hear) she followed after him.
The observatory actually.... made her quite amazed. For a moment she drew off her goggles, knowing in this dim light she could see just as easily, and she put on her normal glasses. Looking through the clean frames she found herself amazed. Of course, upon the first strike of lightning she realized the stupid mistake, and switched back to her goggles. For a moment she wiped off her wet hand, and drew out her notebook again (safe), and began to make a few notes.
"Why is the Linking book not in the main building in which you Link into? What if the bridge were to collapse, would you be able to get to the Linking book?" she looked out though, curious, eyes blinking soft. ".... What are all these-" a crash of thunder, she growled, "... all these machines."
[22:25] Ryuu Firewind: -I hadn't thought of that...- he thought to himself, and made a note to remedy the situation. He was loathe to admit his mistake, however.
"There are alternative methods of getting from island to island, they're simply considrably more dangerous," he said. "And given how long the bridges have held up, I'd say that it's fairly safe. However, I will add a linking book to the entry room if it is that much of a concern..."
"The machines measure various things," he said, "Things like the wind speed, air pressure, electrical charge in the air, ambient temperature, humidity... even the amount of light that comes through the clouds at any time. On that one fortitous sunlit day I managed to take precise readings of how bright the sun was, so I can actually calculate just about how thick the cloud cover is based on the density, which I measure by taking the humidity, and then compare the normal light levels to the current light level." He smiled as he talked, pleased to be displaying what he'd learned. "I've also been working on a way to predict where lightning strikes - it strikes so often here that I can study it far easier. I'm not sure if it would apply to other ages, but there may be a way..."
He stopped suddenly. "My... my apologies, I've stepped beyond my bounds... such things are not for a Writer to contemplate, really... more the province of Engineers and Chemists, I suppose..."
[22:39] RoseTatsuaru: Perfection was her game. Maybe it was best that she had come. Because she could point out a hairline fracture in a building if she thought it was unsafe. A second sense. Of course, becoming a Master, at her age, is not the easiest thing. Maybe easier due to her family. But they helped her along to. Though she looked back to him and nodded, making a note to herself at the same time.
"Sometimes having multiple Linking Books is not at all a terrible issue. If I find that having more than one, or even several in every establishment due to the thought of being trapped in a dangerous environment, I could write to the Book maker's guild to get several blanks for you...." The last note and glanced back over to him.
When he started explaining science, she froze. Well, the basic overlook, she understood. She had a basic understanding of physics and mechanical workings. But she wasn't at all a science person. Giving a look to him as he apologized. With blinking eyes she shook her head. "Honestly... promoting that may actually... help Engineers and the Chemists guild... honestly they complain they don't have enough experimental ages and-... the ages they want to make to experiment are FAR to dangerous, sometimes even for our E. V. Suits-" which is predicted impossible, unless it was throwing them into a middle of a star... "-so, honestly having a writer think up... science. That may be a grand boost within your own guild. I'd find some Chemist and Engineer friends..." She nodded and turnd to him.
"Ok then. I can see that this world is basically dangerous outside. The thought of being struck by lightning frightens me terribly, but due to the fact that it looks like a fools errand to think of wandering outside, I feel better about it." Another note and she slipped the notebook away. Adjusting her goggles to focus better she looked to him. "My last note is I need to check to see if the Great Zero is still functioning." Then she paused, eyes blinking for a moment. "... Its outside too isnt it..."
[22:54] Ryuu Firewind:
He laughed again at that, rubbing his head in embarassment. "Well... yes. It's out that way, with the insturments. Luckily that's on the way to the exit book, so..."
The exit was two-layered, an inner door and an outer, to prevent rain from getting inside and touching the more delicate insturments. Once outside, they were again buffeted by the horrific winds and rain. Lightning at one point crackled overhead and struck one of the insturments, causing it to glow ominously and emit a deafening hum.
The path, which had a sturdy railing, wound around the rocks, till they reached the marker. It was nestled in a smallish natural cavern, sheilded from the wind and rain - unfortunately the opening created a horrible whistling noise due to the passage of air outside.
[23:03] RoseTatsuaru: She sighed hard. Yes. It was outside. But she was not at all worried about it. She nodded, sighed, following after him. Later, her diary would hear of how she hates this world, so much. Because this is logically, safe enough for an Age. Especially in uses. But she dislikes unsafe places! Its against all logic!
Especially after lightning struck. She almost screamed at the noise, and stood up straight once more to appear strong. Her eye twitched hard, but followed after. Oh she was going to go down and work on another machine tonight... or something. Maybe work on her age. Walking into the cave she was happy it was safe here from the elements. The first she did was check if the glow was still there, and began to check if it was still transmitting its signal. Standing up, she smiled, finally. "Good. It's still functioning fine." Turning to him she looked out the cave. "I'd ask to explore a bit more but..." it showed, ".... I don't like this world..... it's pretty, form inside..." Honest. Once more, she checked her notebook, and made a note, and then settled it down. "Well then. Your Age passed, and shall receive my stamp."
[23:12] Ryuu Firewind:
He sighed with relief. "Good, good. I'm sorry you don't like it. I find it fascinating, but... well... it isn't for everyone."
Someday he might have a far more perfect age, though...
"Well, I'm afraid we'll have to cross another bridge to get to the Book..."
So it was that he took her down a staircase down the side of a cliff. The thing would have been quite precarious were it not for the wire cage around it. This was followed by yet another bridge leading into the rock of one of the islands again, into another room much like the first one. The pedestal in the center held the linking book.
"After you."
[23:16] RoseTatsuaru: "When you live your life in safety..." she stated, following after him, "You see this and a naturally dangerous storm worries. And I've never liked-" the second crack came down nearby, and she jumped hard, actually screaming. With a very, very deep sigh, she somehow restrained herself, and continued following. "Light...ning..." At least she was honest.
Seeing the linking book, she was actually happy. With a nod she followed after him, and pressed her hand into the linking panel. To return back she felt the warm pressure of his room around him. The fresh D'ni air, she loved it. Taking off her hood she took off the entire cape she had worn. And from the waist down she was soaked but... oh well. Stepping out of the way she went to find where he had placed the notebook, and soon made her mark, drawing out the stamp to seal her approval for this month.
[23:19] Ryuu Firewind:
He bowed politely then. "Thank you kindly, Master Merth."
Shaking out his coat, he hung it on a peg to dry. "Ah, one more thing... the other day I'd taken a trip to Er'cana, to get my mind off of something... I made a discovery of some new fish. Er, while I wouldn't presume to buden a Master such as yourself with such a trivial concern, perhaps you could at least take this back to the Maintainer's Hall for me...?"
He held out a small folder containing the notes.
[23:23] RoseTatsuaru: "You are very welcome. It is on my my job, after all sir." She nodded, tucking her goggles away to draw back her glasses. She had to adjust them on her nose a bit before she could see him properly and smiled.
"Hm? Oh yes. I remember that note now. The... yellow striped fish? Something akin to that?" she moved over to take the small folder and began to slip through. To see the pictures she realized- ".... huh... I haven't ever seen anything like this either..." She nodded again and gazed up. "I had actually replied to your message myself. Most notes are checked over by the masters and I hold that sector beneath my eye so, it is not at all a problem." Being home, she seemed a lot better, and being done her job, she seemed a bit more open. To be cold was part of her job. "Thank you very much though sir. I think the caterer's will be curious as to how this fish appeared."
[23:24] Ryuu Firewind: He nodded. "Indeed. Now, I shan't keep you any longer... I'm sure you have work to attend to, Master."
[23:26] RoseTatsuaru: Her upper body bowed, and she stood up tall once more. Her glasses had slipped a bit, so she had to move them again. "I do. Thank you Sir Fehna. I hope you have a good day." With that, she dismissed herself to write her final report.
[23:29] Ryuu Firewind:
After she left, he scoffed, "... it's Fenah."
The trip had reminded him of old passions... before he'd been wed. And before...
No matter. Turning, he went back to the study, retrieved the secret book, and resumed writing.
