MystLore entry
The Nexus was created by the Maintainer's Guild as a matter of convenience. The Age consists of a number of rooms, each closed off to each other and each containing a few machines and imager panels. Using the imager panel, one may select linking books displayed upon the panel, upon which the machine selects the book and displays it to the user.
Originally, the Nexus served as a way to rapidly traverse the city of D'ni. Users of the Nexus would input an assigned passcode which would give them a list of books; later, when the Maintainer's Guild developed KIs, the KIs were each linked to the Nexus, increasing security. The level of access that one had to books was entirely dependant on one's social class and Guild. For instance, the lowest classes were not even allowed to access the Nexus at all (the Nexus books throughout D'ni were also kept locked with passcodes; later they were upgraded with Ki locks.) A member of the upper class could escort a member of the lower class to the Nexus, but this was rare (and frowned upon.) the Middle classes generally had access to whatever area of the City they were from, but had to take the ferry to get to other parts, while the Upper classes had access to the entire City. Guildsmen not only had full access to every Nexus point in the City, but also to many Guild-specific locations. Indeed, the various Guild Pubs were sealed to the outside once their constructions were completed, thus the only access to them was by Nexus link.
Later on, the Maintainers decided to allow Guildsmen to add their own Linking Books to the machine in the Nexus, keyed to their individual KIs. This meant that should a Guildsman need access to a personal Age or to a Guild Age from anywhere in the City, they could do so from within the Nexus. Furthermore, should a Guildsman wish to allow access to a personal Age using the Nexus, they could give another a verification code in their KI which would allow them to access the book - and then change the code later do disallow access.
Security in the Nexus was paramount, so only high-level maintainers had their KIs calibrated for maintenance, allowing them access to the machine itself. Furthermore, the link to the machine itself was held only within the Maintainer's guildhall.
The location of the Nexus itself is deep underground on an age whose surface is unknown to any but the Maintainers. Clearly, the Age has oxygen as there are hidden vents to provide air, but the Maintainers have implied that the surface of the world is incredibly dangerous and hostile to life. Some have speculated that the surface is used as a training age, but this is unknown.
